Facility and land space is a valuable item
Januarary 23, 2005
Lititz Record

Facility and land space is a valuable item. With spring just around the corner, and youth and adult organizations gearing up for their seasons, field space is of high priority in the region. The high volume of participants in the youth organizations of soccer, little league baseball, girl’s softball, rugby, and the fastest growing activity, lacrosse, makes space a high commodity in the region.
On Monday, February 13th, a meeting will be held in the Lititz Community Center for requests for field usage this spring and fall. Anyone looking for field space is invited to the meeting. At the present time, in the region, only Warwick Township has public field space available (other than the school district). Assigning field use is a challenging job, one that tries to satisfy all groups and organizations.

Many variables come into play when scheduling for events, such as:

    1. Maintenance of the field: the youth organizations, Warwick Township crews, and Warwick High School crew spend a great deal of time aerating, seeding, dragging, watering, lining, and the moving of equipment. Because of the constant use on the facilities during the spring and summer, keeping them in good playing shape is a real challenge, especially if Mother Nature doesn’t comply.
    2. Making sure that the fields are used efficiently by each organization; this takes into account long range planning.
    3. Putting in a system of who gets first priority for field use.
It will be an interesting and challenging endeavor in scheduling field use.

Besides Warwick Township and the Warwick School District providing field space, other entities helping the youth organizations and adult leagues are the private and church facilities. Without their help and space, scheduling would be a real nightmare for the region. These private owners and churches provide field use at a minimal cost to the organizations. I want to thank the private sector for their generous use of their playing fields. Future developments at the Warwick Township Municipal Campus and in Elizabeth Township will help relieve some of the field space crunch in the next few years. However, as a region, we need to be creative in our use of open space.
